48. Sons of God

Sons of God:

Genesis 6:2 - "That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose."

Genesis 6:4 - "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."

Angels do not marry (Matthew 22:30, Luke 20:34-36), so the phrase "sons of God" here must refer to men. We are "equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being children of the resurrection" (Luke 20:36).

Job 1:6 - "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them."

Job 2:1 - "Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD."

Satan had been "going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it", so the "sons of God" are not angels, but men. Satan cannot accuse elect angels, as they are without sin, and he certainly would not accuse his own demons!

Job 38:7 - "When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"

This verse could refer to angels, but need not do so. In John 1:51 angels are called "angels of God," in 2 Chronicles 18:18 they are called "hosts of heaven." Nowhere else are they referred to as "sons of God."

All the following verses clearly refer to elect men:

John 1:12 - "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."

Romans 8:14 - "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."

Romans 8:19 - "For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God."

Philippians 2:15 - "That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world."

1 John 3:1,2 - "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."

Children of God:

All verses mentioning this phrase clearly refer to elect men:

Matthew 5:9 - "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

Luke 20:36 - "Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection."

John 11:52 - "And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad."

Romans 8:16 "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God."

Romans 8:21 - "Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God."

Romans 9:8 - "That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed."

Galatians 3:26 - "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."

1 John 3:10 - "In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother."

1 John 5:2 - "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments."
